Namir, Mordekhai
(1897-1975)
   Israeli politician. Born in Bratolinbovka, Ukraine, he settled in Palestine in 1924. From 1929 to 1935 he was director of the statistical section of the Histadrut, and in 1936-43 he served as secretary-general of the Tel Aviv Workers' Council. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 he held diplomatic posts in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Romania and the USSR. From 1951 he served in the Knesset, and became minister of labour; he was also the first mayor of Tel Aviv.
